How to Read Gold, Silver and Crypto Rates

Where the gold price on this page comes from

Gold trades globally in troy ounces quoted in US dollars, and that single international spot figure is the base for every other number shown here. A rate in rupees per tola is that same spot price passed through two conversions: dollars into your currency, then troy ounces into your unit. Nothing else changes.

This matters because it explains why gold in Pakistan, the UAE and the UK moves in near lockstep even though the headline figures look nothing alike. When the dollar strengthens against the rupee, the local gold rate can climb on a day the international price barely moved at all.

Karat is a ratio, not a grade

Karat splits gold into 24 parts and tells you how many of them are actually gold. 24 karat is 99.9 percent pure, 22 karat is 22 parts in 24 or 91.67 percent, 21 karat is 87.5 percent and 18 karat is 75 percent. The rate follows that ratio directly, which is why the purity buttons above simply scale the same underlying spot price.

Pure gold is soft, so jewellery is usually alloyed down for strength. That is a manufacturing decision rather than a quality problem, and it is why 22 and 21 karat dominate South Asian and Gulf jewellery while 18 karat is more common in European settings.

Silver follows a different convention

Silver is described by fineness in parts per thousand rather than karat. Fine silver at 999 is 99.9 percent pure. Sterling at 925 is 92.5 percent silver with copper making up the balance, which is the standard for tableware and most silver jewellery. The 958 and 900 marks appear in Britannia silver and older coin silver respectively.

Spot price is not shop price

The figure on this page is what a wholesale ounce changes hands for. A retail counter adds several layers on top: dealer margin, making charges for the labour of turning metal into an item, wastage for what is lost in that process, and in many markets an import duty or a local association premium.

Expect a shop rate to sit meaningfully above spot, and expect a buyback offer to sit below it. Use this page to judge whether the spread you are being quoted is reasonable, not to argue that a jeweller should sell at spot.

Comparing cryptocurrencies by price is a beginner mistake

A coin priced at a fraction of a cent is not cheap, and a coin priced in the tens of thousands is not expensive. Unit price is a function of how many coins exist, and supply varies by many orders of magnitude across assets. Market cap, which multiplies price by circulating supply, is the figure that tells you how large an asset actually is, and it is why the table above sorts on it by default.

The 24 hour change column is useful for spotting movement, but a large percentage swing on a small cap asset represents far less real money than a small swing on a large one. Read the two columns together rather than in isolation.

Why gold, silver and crypto belong on the same page

Gold and cryptocurrency are both frequently described as hedges, and both attract buyers who distrust holding cash. Their behaviour is quite different. Gold has thousands of years of pricing history, deep physical demand from jewellery and central banks, and moves in single digit percentages over a typical month.

Major cryptocurrencies are barely more than a decade old, are driven largely by liquidity and sentiment, and can move that much in a single day. Watching both markets side by side is the fastest way to develop a realistic feel for what volatility looks like in each.

Gold, Silver and Crypto Rate FAQs

How often do the gold, silver and crypto rates on this page update?

Rates refresh every two hours. The timestamp below the gold and silver cards shows exactly when the current figures were pulled from the market feed, and the page reloads itself once that window closes. If a data provider is unreachable, the page keeps displaying the last confirmed rates and labels them clearly instead of going blank.

What is the difference between a tola and a gram of gold?

One tola equals 11.6638 grams. Tola is the standard gold trading unit across Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, while the gram is used in most international retail markets. The global spot price itself is quoted in troy ounces, where one troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams. This tool converts between all four units instantly, so you can read the same rate in whichever unit your market uses.

Why is 22 karat gold cheaper than 24 karat gold?

Because it contains less gold. Karat measures purity in parts out of 24. 24 karat gold is 99.9 percent pure, 22 karat is 91.67 percent, 21 karat is 87.5 percent and 18 karat is 75 percent. The metal value scales directly with that ratio, so a 22 karat rate is roughly 91.67 percent of the 24 karat rate before a jeweller adds making and wastage charges.

Will this gold rate match my local jeweller in Karachi, Lahore or Dubai?

Not exactly, and it is not designed to. This page shows international spot price converted into your selected currency. A retail counter adds dealer margin, making charges, wastage and any local import duty or association premium on top. Use the spot figure here as the floor to measure a shop quote against, not as the price you should expect to pay.

Why does silver use 999 and 925 instead of karat?

Silver purity is expressed as fineness in parts per thousand, which is the correct trade convention for that metal. Fine silver at 999 is 99.9 percent pure. Sterling silver at 925 is 92.5 percent silver alloyed with copper, and is the standard for jewellery and tableware. The 958 mark is Britannia silver and 900 is older coin silver. Karat is a gold measurement and is not used for silver.

Which currencies can I view these gold, silver and crypto rates in?

US dollar, Pakistani rupee, UAE dirham, Saudi riyal, British pound, euro and Indian rupee. Your selection is saved on your own device, so the page opens in your preferred currency on every future visit. Conversions are applied using live foreign exchange rates pulled alongside the metal and crypto prices.

How do I calculate the value of gold jewellery I already own?

Weigh the item, then enter that weight in the calculator on this page, select the karat marked on the piece and choose your unit. The result is the indicative spot value of the metal content. Remember that a buyer will normally deduct a refining or resale margin, and that any stones, enamel or non gold components are not part of the metal weight.

Is market cap or unit price the better way to compare cryptocurrencies?

Market cap, without question. Unit price depends entirely on how many coins exist, and supply varies by many orders of magnitude across assets. A coin priced in fractions of a cent is not cheap and one priced in the tens of thousands is not expensive. Market cap multiplies price by circulating supply and is the standard measure of an asset actual size, which is why the table on this page sorts on it by default.

What does the 7 day trend line in the crypto table show?

It is a sparkline, a compressed price line covering the last seven days. It communicates shape and direction rather than precise values, so you can scan twenty assets at once and see which are trending up and which are falling. Green indicates a positive 24 hour move and red a negative one. For exact figures over a longer window, use the price history chart above the table.

Are gold and cryptocurrency comparable as investments?

They behave very differently despite both being described as hedges. Gold has thousands of years of pricing history, deep physical demand from jewellery and central banks, and typically moves in single digit percentages over a month. Major cryptocurrencies are barely a decade old, are driven largely by liquidity and sentiment, and can move that much in a single day. Watching them side by side is the quickest way to understand what volatility actually looks like in each market.
